“On 22nd September 1987 I was sitting in the local hospital waiting room. The room was very hot and as I waited, I turned the pages of an old magazine. I noticed a small reproduction of a Modigliani painting, and underneath it a short description of the painter and his last mistress, Jeanne Hebuterne. The scrap of story made me turn icy cold because I felt that it was already known to me.”
Thus began Patrice Chaplin’s extraordinary journey into the lives of these doomed lovers a journey that was finally to unlock the secrets of their past.
During the years of the First World War, somewhere on the terraces of the cafés of Montparnasse, Jeanne Hebuterne met the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. She was a pretty young artist with a talent recognised by Foujita and Severini; he was in his thirties, unstable, penniless, unrecognised.
Yet as Cocteau said of him, ‘he had glory’. Incapable of forming lasting attachments, he seemed always to be appearing, then disappearing into the darkness laughing.
From July 1917 Jeanne lived with him in a top-floor Montparnasse studio. She posed for him continually as he, increasingly embittered, found escape in drink.
One week in the freezing January of 1920 Jeanne, expecting their second child, remained alone with Modigliani as he lay dying of tubercular meningitis. Too late, they were found, and Modigliani died in a charity hospital.
At the mortuary Jeanne gazed at the face of her lover in death until her father took her away. That night, nine months pregnant, she fell to her death from a fifth-floor window. Jeanne was only twenty-one years old. She had said ‘I know he is dead, but soon he will be living for me’.
For years speculation has surrounded the story of Jeanne Hebuterne. Then Patrice Chaplin embarked on an extraordinary journey that was to take her to Paris and to Haut-de-Cagnes, that was to be full of coincidence and chance meetings which would begin to unlock the past.
She found letters, photographs and drawings never previously seen. Jeanne’s friends and their children at last chose to break their silence.
Written with passion, humour and empathy, this personal and moving account at last casts full light on the much-mythologised life and tragic death of Jeanne Hebuterne.

Amedeo Modigliani and Jeanne Hebuterne's historic tale is (in my view) one of Patrice Chaplin's best writings. As she draws us into this page turner, we move with her 'drive to know everything' about the Jeanne Hebuterne
as the great love of Amedeo Modigliani's life.
We also get right into the midst of his life with her and his lovers many.
But...not like Jeanne...she understands him...
no one else does in the way that she does.
There has never been an historical account so intimate and so compelling as this. I don't want to
give it all away...but I'm sure you will be enthralled and touched by the subtleties, intensities, depth,
toil, love, tenderness and repudiation. And... the spectrum of expressions that these qualities
take on in the life of fame, loneliness and recognition. Wonderful!

Into the Darkness Laughing The Story of Jeanne Hebuterne Modigliani Last Mis Patrice Chaplin 9781542540483 Books Reviews
A wonderful, compelling read! Jeanne's tragic story and her all-consuming love for Modigliani are told with compassion and sensitivity by a highly accomplished author. This could be the story of any talented young artist dazzled by the enormous personality and creativity of the maestro. I couldn't put this book down and am so glad that this tale of Modigliani's last mistress and 'muse' has come under the spotlight. Its feminist connotations are of great relevance nowadays!
This was an interesting book.It was written in a hard and uncompromising style that,as a reader, made me uncomfortable.
There was an assumtive attitude to many conclusions the author made with little room for speculation.Since other authors have opposite views and these are second or third hand testimony,it is hard to accept the authoritative tenor in this book.It is a non positive book based on a negative subject.
A beautifully written book about an altogether disturbing true life story that left me feeling very melancholic. Glad this tale finally made it into the open.
A delicious biography by Patrice Chaplin. Could not put it down.
This reads like a novel but is based on the real life of Jeanne Herburene and Modligiani. I American away with a real sense of who Modigliani was as a man and an artist, but also the same sacrifices she made to remain his Muse
This brief account of Jeanne Hebuterne is the heart-wrenching love story of the life she shared with the gifted painter Amedeo Modigliani. Her transcendently devoted relationship went beyond convention and touched the souls of millions. Well written, it renders a sense and feel for the bohemian turn of the century mindset and lifestyle. The account is an excellent complement to the movie Modigliani.
